Labor Companion Services

The Peggy V. Helmerich Women's Health Center is proud to offer a volunteer Doula service to expectant moms and families. Doula (pronounced "doo-luh") is a Greek word that means "woman servant."

A doula acts as a labor companion to the mother while she progresses through the birthing process. She can accompany the mother from triage, to labor & delivery, and, finally, to recovery.

A doula does not provide medical care, as a midwife does, but she offers emotional support to the mother and family as well as facilitates communication between the patient and staff. Doulas are trained in basic and advanced labor companion techniques. For more information about utilizing the Hillcrest Doula Service or becoming a Doula Volunteer, please contact Jennifer Mason, Labor Companion team leader, at (918) 579-2244.
