Tai Chi

Wednesday at 5:15 p.m.
Fee: $40 for 8-week session

Tai Chi is an “internal” or “soft” Chinese art – so called because it focuses on working with the flow of strength and energy rather than against it – that dates back over 2,000 years. The slow, graceful movements of this Chinese system of exercise and breathing have led some to call it “meditation in motion.” Tai Chi is used for both health and self-defense.

The self-defense aspects of Tai Chi focus on using opponents’ strength and will to overcome them. It is said that using Tai Chi, one may ward off two thousand pounds with only four ounces. Tai Chi is grounded in body mechanics, kinetics, medicine, physiology, psychology, philosophy and aesthetics.

Tai Chi has a calming, relaxing effect that teaches a concept through movement and thought: that might does not make right. Balance is better. Tai Chi can lower blood pressure, increase energy levels, improve cardiovascular function, diminish stress levels and improve balance, coordination and posture.
